How Unit Conversion Works
Unit conversion is the process of expressing a measurement in a different unit while preserving its value. All conversions involve multiplying or dividing by a conversion factor — a ratio that equals exactly 1 because both numerator and denominator represent the same quantity in different units.
For example: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, so to convert 5 inches to centimetres: 5 × 2.54 = 12.7 cm. To convert back, divide: 12.7 ÷ 2.54 = 5 inches.
Temperature conversions are non-linear and require formulas instead of simple multiplication: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.
Metric vs. Imperial System — Key Differences
The metric system (SI) is used by most of the world and is based on powers of ten, making conversions within the system simple (e.g., 1 km = 1,000 m = 100,000 cm). The imperial system (used primarily in the United States, with some usage in the UK) uses historically derived units with less regular conversion factors (12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 1,760 yards in a mile).
Most Common Conversions — Quick Reference
- Length: 1 inch = 2.54 cm | 1 foot = 30.48 cm | 1 mile = 1.609 km | 1 metre = 3.281 feet
- Weight: 1 kg = 2.205 lbs | 1 lb = 453.6 g | 1 stone = 6.35 kg
- Temperature: 0°C = 32°F | 100°C = 212°F | 37°C = 98.6°F (body temperature)
- Volume: 1 litre = 4.227 US cups | 1 US gallon = 3.785 litres
